1. Transcribe medical reports using correct report format
2. Transcribe medical reports using correct capitalization, number, punctuation, abbreviation, symbol, and metric measurement rules
3. Identify and define the knowledge, skills, abilities, and responsibilities required of a medical transcriptionist–including medical editing

Learning Objective:

By the end of this course, students should understand the following:

• Understanding of the functions and proper use of transcription equipment
• Describe the importance of the confidential nature of medical reports
• Be aware of HIPPA guidelines for the medical transcriptionist
• Describe the content and purpose of the types of inpatient medical reports
• Describe the content and purpose of the types of outpatient medical reports and correspondence
• Understanding of abbreviations that should not be used in transcription, hospitals or medical settings
• Spell both the English and medical terms correctly, as well as the abbreviations presented–either by memory or by using a dictionary/medical book
• Define the medical terms and abbreviations presented–either by memory or by using a dictionary/reference book
• Define the prefixes, combining forms and suffixes presented 
• Recognize the advantages of having current reference material and be able to use it effectively
• Use standard proofreader’s marks to edit medical reports without changing either the meaning or the dictator’s style
• Recognize the opportunities offered to medical transcriptionists
