By the end of this course, students should understand the following:
- Understanding of the functions and proper use of transcription equipment
- Describe the importance of the confidential nature of medical reports
- Be aware of HIPPA guidelines for the medical transcriptionist
- Describe the content and purpose of the types of inpatient medical reports
- Describe the content and purpose of the types of outpatient medical reports and correspondence
- Understanding of abbreviations that should not be used in transcription, hospitals or medical settings
- Spell both the English and medical terms correctly, as well as the abbreviations presented–either by memory or by using a dictionary/medical book
- Define the medical terms and abbreviations presented–either by memory or by using a dictionary/reference book
- Define the prefixes, combining forms and suffixes presented
- Recognize the advantages of having current reference material and be able to use it effectively
- Use standard proofreader’s marks to edit medical reports without changing either the meaning or the dictator’s style
- Recognize the opportunities offered to medical transcriptionists
