Medical Office Administrator Online

Objective

The Medical Office Administrator Online program is designed to provide students with work and other obligations flexibility in completing this full­time program. This program is taught online with required online learning activities each week, as well as 4 hours of weekly online live sessions which will be conducted in either the evenings or on the weekend (depending on the cohort start dates). The online core coursework is followed by a full­time 6 week (240­hour) externship placement in a work environment.

Program Outline

MEDICAL OFFICE PROCEDURES & HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT
These courses examine MOA professionalism, office procedures/organization, safety, patient interaction, and an exploration of communication styles and attention to the office ambience. Understanding appointment scheduling, filing systems, patient charting, and related forms and documents are some of the subjects specifically addressed. Students will also be introduced to Electronic Medical Records (EMR).

ANATOMY & TERMINOLOGY
Students explore the human body throughout the learning modules by focusing on the structure, function & terminology of each system. This program emphasizes the following systems and related topics:

• Integumentary • Musculoskeletal • Nervous • Endocrine • Pharmacology • Female reproduction • Digestive • Hematic & Lymphatic • Gastrointestinal • Respiratory • Special senses • Cardiovascular • Urinary • Medical Terminology • Respiratory

VITAL SIGNS & PHYSICAL CRISIS, CPR LEVEL C & STANDARD FIRST AID
Students will acquire the basic knowledge and skills required to accurately measure and record temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure and the anthropometric measurements of height and weight. Red Cross Certification of Standard First Aid /CPR is included. As an option, students from out of town can take CPR (level C) and SFA on their own from a WSIB­approved CPR provider. Proof of completion is required.

ACCOUNTING
A review of basic mathematics is related to accounting, taxation, purchase orders and payroll. Procedures include issuing receipts, office banking and payments, bank deposits, petty cash, cheque writing, and bank reconciliation. Acquiring practical experience with various office machines, email, computerized scheduling and billing.

GRAMMAR
Reviewing the importance of proper grammar use in the workplace and in the production of accurate and descriptive reports.

CLINICAL SECRETARIAL & PROFESSIONALISM
Students will discuss office professionalism, and engage in class exercises to demonstrate appropriate workplace conduct and professional manners. The many roles of the clinical administrator in the hospital setting will be discussed.

STANDARDS & SAFETY IN HEALTHCARE
This course explores the acts and regulations related to workplace safety, and the policies, protocols and committees required to practice quality assurance. Safety practices for employees, clients and patients, incident reporting and follow-up are also included.

DIAGNOSTIC TESTING & PATIENT PREPARATION
This course includes the MOA’s responsibilities in preparing patients for various medical examinations, understanding several medical tests (diagnostic imaging, etc.), techniques, patient positioning and tray preparation.

NUTRITION, WELL BABY & CHILD DEVELOPMENT
The nutrition course will develop an understanding of the recommendations for healthy eating, and discuss the importance of the basic nutrients, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and water for all age groups. In the Well Baby and Child Development course, students will study immunization schedules, childhood diseases, recording vital signs such as height and weight in the growth chart, the benefits of breastfeeding etc…

INFECTION CONTROL
Understanding the infection process; microorganism growth; the importance and techniques of hand-washing; communicable disease and pathogen transmission; autoclave use & sterilization; the immune response; and accepted standards and protocols for handling human samples are all included.

COMPUTER SKILLS
Students will gain practical computer experience throughout this program’s learning modules with specific emphasis on:
